GG Hits & Misses

Did you watch the Golden Globes?  What did you think of Ricky Gervais?  I thought he was fantastic! He was so bracingly sharp, which made for a very interesting show since I really only ever watch awards shows for the fashions.  On that note, as ever is the case, there were hits and misses on the catwalk that is the red carpet so here's my quick rundown before I hit the sack.

First up, the misses: Angelina Jolie in an awesome colour but ugly, ugly (yes it needs to be repeated) dress and lank, blah hair; Emma Stone who's so pretty but looks at one with her dress; Sandra Bullock who also looks like the same colour as her dress with the unflattering thick fringe; and Christina Aguleira - what happened to her?  She used to be so cute!

My hits include 2 ladies in black - Olivia Wilde in this gorgeous, sparkly, princess-y Marchesa ballgown (I hate her boring hair though) and Eva Longoria in this restrained and streamlined Zac Posen that reads like a super-fem tuxedo-dress to me.

And 2 ladies in blue: Jenna Ushkowitz in I-don't-know-who but she's perfect and I love her hair and make-up; and Amy Adams in a Marchesa gown with laser-cut details.
This Versace on January Jones - I wasn't keen on it when I first saw it.  But, it grew on me and I've come to admire it's amazing fringe construction.

And my all-time favourite of the night was Kyra Sedgwick in this juicy orange Emilio Pucci - the way she's accessorized it with the turquoise drop earrings and the multiple gold bangles is perfection. And if you watched the candid bits of the telecast, you would have seen how sweet she and Kevin Bacon were. I love them as a couple!

I'm a couch potato

My sister and I weren't particularly close growing up given the dynamics of being close in age with a widowed working mother who always told me I had to be the responsible one and take care of my younger siblings. To say that we butt heads a lot is an understatement.

I also didn't think that we had very much in common, but I'm coming to learn that we're not as different as I once thought. For one thing, we love the same procedural dramas on TV - and it's not like we ever really watched them together or recommended them to each other either. We discovered the shows independently and only discovered we had them in common afterwards.

Like Bones. And NCIS, and now NCIS: Los Angeles. And Castle! I was wondering what all these shows had in common besides the crime-solving angle, and it's the humour. All of these shows are funny. The characters and their chemistry make for a very enjoyable hour.

And since we're on the topic of TV, I figured I'd come clean and admit how much TV I watch. So aside from the 4 shows above, I also follow:
* Glee - can't wait for it to return next month!
* The Mentalist - got hooked watching old episodes on Air Canada
* Lie to Me - it's back in June!
* Fringe - I stopped watching it for a bit because I got scared but have come back to it
* FlashForward - I've had a think for Joe Fiennes since Shakespeare in Love
* Vampire Diaries - never read either series but this is way better than Twilight in my opinion
* The Good Wife - Julianna Margulies rocks...plus I had a crush on Josh Charles when he was in Threesome (Lara Flynn Boyle was so beautiful once upon a time)
* How I Met Your Mother - love NPH!

Wow. That's 12 shows! Of course, I also catch a few design shows on HGTV including Pure Design and the latest edition of Sarah's House which just debuted last week! Thank goodness for my PVR! It's worth every penny I spent on it for the time and freedom it's given back to me!

Anyway, here's the promo for the highly-anticipated 100th episode of Bones that brings us back to when Booth and Brennan first met. Can't wait!!!

Bangs 'n' Layers

I PVR'd Ellen on Oprah tonight and was completely diverted by how great Portia de Rossi's bangs looked with her hair straightened and pulled back in a ponytail.

I've been flirting with the idea of cutting my hair for the last few weeks now and have gone so far as to entertain a short bob...but I'm not quite ready for such a drastic change. Not when winter is around the corner - I need all the hair to keep me warm...so I'm thinking long-ish bangs are just the thing. They're not something I haven't done before...but hers are quite a bit shorter than I'd normally go.

Bangs and more layers...ya...I'm thinking that'll keep my hair boredom at bay - at least through the winter, anyway....

A Wild and Live Friday

After spending last weekend holed up at home watching the complete first and last season of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - I'm still sad it was cancelled - I decided I should get out this weekend and, you know, be social.

So last night, N and I watched the last showing of Where The Wild Things Are. I don't remember reading the book as a child so I had no expectations about the story, but this was one of the sweetest and most charming films I've watched in recent memory.


Afterwards, we headed over to The Horseshoe Tavern to catch KC Roberts & the Live Revolution perform. I've never been to The Horseshoe because frankly, my tastes run more to wine bars than dive bars, but I made the exception last night because I really enjoyed their performance when I first saw them at the Beaches Jazz Festival in July. They were just as good last night and they got me all nostalgic with their unexpected, yet funky rendition of the Thundercats theme song. Incidentally, there's a movie in development according to imdb.



I picked up their latest disc, Parkdale Funk I, at the show and am actually a bit disappointed that their ode to Toronto, City by the Lake, isn't on it. Ah well.

Fringe

Did you watch it? Holy moly, was it ever good! I wasn't planning on it but I had it on in the background for company - I never understood why my mom had the TV on when she was home alone and didn't even watch it, but I get it now - anyway, it was freakin' amazing and I just may be hooked now.

There's something about him....

Our 2009 Ikea catalog was delivered this weekend and I've been flipping through it pretty much non-stop ever since. The new collection is supported by a quirky television ad and I was wondering why the male dancer looked so familiar to me. And after searching YouTube posts of So You Think You Can Dance (I'm a HUGE fan!) tonight, I found my answer! His name is Robert Muraine and he was on the show!!

Sleek 'n' Slim

I stopped by the Future Shop last week to pick up photos and was surprised by how affordable the HD flat panel TVs were with prices starting at $600 - I always thought they were $1000+ so I figured I'd have to wait a year or 2 before getting a sleek 'n' slim set.

I was flipping through the flyers last night and asked my brother how much he paid for his TV and why they were so cheap (it's all relative, I know)...so he started rhyming off things like resolution and contrast ratios and the like. We then exchanged the following dialogue:

Bro: Why don't you get a Sony TV?
Me: Why a Sony? Are they better?
Bro: I have a gift card with about $700 on it.
Me: (pause) Does this mean you're giving me the card?
Bro: (shrug) Sure.
Me: Really? Cool!

So instead of working, I googled Sony TV reviews last night and stopped at the Future Shop and Sony Store today after work to ask some questions.

I'm thinking 32" is just about the right size...not too big and not too small...as for the model, I'm thinking this one in particular for the pixels and contrast ratio and blah blah blah, plus it looks good:


So in return for the TV, I offered to take him to Italy with me. I'd already planted the seed with our cousins in Europe about a reunion in Italy next Spring so it'd be fun to have my brother there.

His reply? "If I have time."

New TV Classics

I was listening to the morning show on CHFI on my way to mandarin class and Erin and Mike were talking about Entertainment Weekly's round-up of the new TV classics of the last 25 years with qualification that they had to be no longer in production. Each of the personalities named their Top 5, which got me started on thinking what my Top 5 would be...and they are:
